Real time thoughts from Jim on 1st 1/2 hour.
First, question, why is your stimulus plan better than his. McCain: Beloved Nancy Reagan? Weird. In two of the three debates McCain opens with condolences. Obama: repeat his principles. Then list of four things. Good. McCain: Going back to some story about Joe the plumber, who would have to pay more taxes because evidently he would make more than $250K dollars as a plumber. Obama replied, McCain hits with "spread the wealth around comment." McCain says cut taxes for businesses.
Basically, the premise here is that a plumber will make $250K. If you buy that McCain carries the day.
Second question, what will you cut as a result of the $750B plan. Obama, makes a good point that we don't know how much the plan will cost. He lists a very specific cut from some $15B "give away to insurance." This is why specifics suck. Finishes with we're investing in the future bit. McCain misses by going back to home.
McCain starts with listing energy plans. (Hm, smile looks a little smug from Obama.) McCain gives some specifics, ethanol subsidies, eliminate tariffs on sugar? And, back to earmarks, and overhead projector.
McCain to Obama: I'm not president Bush.
Obama lists some specifics on where he is a maverick. So, more details. Then a late hit. I don't know looks tough.
