Train Wreck

Posted not because it is hugely significant (it isn't) or because it will affect the race substantially (it won't), but because I can't turn my eyes away from the train wreck that the VP selection of Palin is turning out to be. Today's revelations (that's just todays!) include:

-- Unwed daughter pregnant, keeping baby (who's like Britney now? Oh, snap!)
-- McCain was apparently unaware of this when he selected her!
-- Palin lawyers up for Troopergate (McCain also apparently previously unaware she had sought counsel), and prepares to be deposed.
-- Palin was apparently a former member of a fringe party advocating a secession vote
-- She lied when she claimed to have opposed the bridge to nowhere
-- She chaired indicted Sen Ted Stevens' 527
-- Video emerges of her wondering what it is that a VP does
-- Palin doesn't know when the Pledge of Allegiance was written
-- The New York Times reports on the fact the McCain apparently did not vet his candidate prior to selecting her
-- The McCain campaign is reported to be on the ground in Alaska vetting her now (better late than never, right?)
-- Palin didn't actually win the 1984 Miss Alaska Miss Congeniality award

No, that last one isn't a joke, nor, it must be said, are any of the others. But, damn, wow. What a day. Good thing there's a hurricane lashing New Orleans and it's a holiday, so probably nobody noticed. Seriously, this is making Harriet Miers look like a great nomination in comparison.

The only real moral to this affair, IMO, is that John McCain is a reckless, impulsive decision-maker. His mavericky, ill-considered decision just may wind up helping him in November, since it does get the evangelicals back in his camp, which he needed. But damn he would be a scary, scary, dangerous man to have in the oval office.
