Palin continued to inject religious beliefs into her policy at times. "She asked the library how she could go about banning books," he says, because some voters thought they had inappropriate language in them. "The librarian was aghast." The librarian, Mary Ellen Baker, couldn't be reached for comment, but news reports from the time show that Palin had threatened to fire her for not giving "full support" to the mayor.Also, she was linked today to Jack Abramhoff.
And it appears she's now preparing to stonewall the Troopergate investigation, at least till after the election.
Leading institutional conservatives like Krauthammer, Frum, and Ponurru all seem to agree that McCain has jumped the shark with this pick.
Several websites have started "Palin death watch" threads, and Intrade has Palin at a 16% chance of being withdrawm as VP nominee prior to the election. It won't happen. For McCain to even admit that the selection was ill-considered would be catastrophic politically, and the right would turn on him even more forcefully if they perceived him as abandoning their darling. I suppose that she could be convinced to quietly withdraw to "spend more time" with her special needs infant or some other plausible pretext. Absent that, we're just going to be left for the next two months to wonder what the heck he was thinking, and he's going to be saddled with a running mate who is a burden.
God, I love good political theater.
