Things not to say

If you are a white republican from Georgia, it is probably wise to avoid describing the nation's first african-american presidential candidate as "uppity."

It doesn't quite fit the image your party is trying to project, ya know?

Yes, stupid beyond reason. At the same time, from the article:

In August, Rep. Shelley Berkley (D-Nev.) told reporters, “When I hear the word ‘elitist’ linked with Barack Obama, to me, that is a code word for 'uppity.' I find it extremely offensive and John McCain should know better.”

I don't buy it as code for anything. McCain thinks Obama is elitist and is trying to call him on it. I guarantee he'd use the same line on Kerry (and probably did).
