unemployment rates

I saw over the weekend a report (evening network news) on the unemployment rate that indicated it was around 6% now, and quite plausibly headed over 10% in the next few months, and who knew where the ceiling was. Then I read a follow up article (NY Post) that indicated those numbers were inaccurate for historical comparisons in that the guidelines for those measures had been modified so drastically in the 90's welfare reform movement. According to the article, if we counted unemployment the way it was calculated in the 30's, the % would be double, and we'd look a lot closer to a depression then we seem to. Anybody know a source for judging these numbers accurately?
