Dynasty!

Just for the record, I think it would be awful if Caroline Kennedy were appointed to the NY senate seat. Atrios said it well:
It's one thing when the children of politicians use their name and network advantages to make political careers for themselves - regrettable but inevitable in our very imperfect meritocracy - but quite another when it's just bestowed on them.
It has additionally been pointed out that she's not terribly progressive, and has an extremely thin public record.

On the marginally-related topic, Beau Biden was not appointed outright to the Delaware senate seat, which made me glad. But a placeholder was appointed so he would have something of a clear field to run for the open seat in 2010. He is, however, DE attorney general and currently serving in The Sandbox, so at least he is a credible candidate, albeit one whose accomplishments do have something to do with his name. And at least the voters will get to make the final decision.
